Gen-Y and the Colorblind Lie
sexartandpolitics:britticisms:(via robot-heart)
Class conversation
Them: Well, I just don’t see race.
Me: Well, I’m black…so I do.
The colorblind lie ties into a lot of things, most of all our Post-Civil Rights Era white privilege. As in, a whole generation of kids have been taught to “tolerate” other races (which as a whole gives people reason to not really understand or appreciate other cultures, but to ignore them).
That is a great post.
So is this one, from a different perspective but in a similar vien — migrants in Australia. Obviously an issue close to my heart.
Since I moved to Australia in the 1960s, nothing has changed in our treatment of migrants except the acronyms applicable to them.
In the 70s, the migrants were collectively referred to as “NESB” - non-English speaking backgrounds. Today, we are known as “CALD” - culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The prospect of migrants who face racism being accepted as equals is far less likely than the government deciding to change the acronyms again in the next round of reports.
I know, because in 35 years living as a migrant Australian, my experience with racism has not dimmed with the passage of time.
